Djelfa: Between Infinite Steppe and Prehistoric Heritage

Djelfa tourism offers total immersion in a land of striking contrasts—boundless steppe, prehistoric rock art, and nomadic traditions. Located between the High Plateaus and the first Saharan foothills, the wilaya of Djelfa links the fertile north to the arid south, revealing a natural and cultural wealth still little known.

An Outstanding Archaeological Heritage

Rock Engravings of Zaccar and Oued el Ma
Djelfa hosts one of the largest concentrations of rock art in the Maghreb, with thousands of engravings dating back several millennia. These depict antelopes, lions, hunting scenes, and ritual activities.

Tumuli and Dolmens
Scattered across the region, these ancient burial structures bear witness to long-forgotten civilizations.

Steppic Nature and Striking Landscapes

Vast Steppes
Covering much of the territory, these grasslands are ideal for sheep breeding, notably the Ouled Djellal breed, prized for its quality. Endless plains offer unique vistas, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Djebel Senalba
This cedar- and pine-covered mountain range is perfect for hiking, photography, and tranquil forest walks.

Local Flora and Fauna
Despite arid conditions, the steppe shelters species adapted to the environment, such as the fennec fox, striped hyena, and the protected houbara bustard.

Nomadic Life and Traditional Culture

Nomadic Heritage
Djelfa remains deeply rooted in Bedouin traditions. Seasonal festivals (moussems), agricultural fairs, fantasia horse shows, and spectacular traditional weddings still animate the region.

Local Crafts
Wool carpets, raw weavings, camel saddles, and utilitarian pottery reflect a simple yet authentic material culture.

Pastoral Gastronomy

  • Mechoui (lamb slow-roasted over embers), trid, berkoukes, and local kesra rakhsis bread

  • Fermented milk (raib), dates from neighboring southern oases, and mint tea served under a tent

  • Fresh dairy products from local herds
