Site Touristique
The Gourara is an emblematic Saharan region located around the city of Timimoun, in southwestern Algeria. It is renowned for its lush oases, red palm groves, and above all for its ksour — fortified villages built of red earth that tell centuries of history, tradition, and adaptation to the desert environment.
The ksour of the Gourara are not simply villages:
✔️ They are the result of remarkable human ingenuity, built from red earth that blends harmoniously with the desert landscape.
✔️ They reflect traditional architecture perfectly adapted to the arid climate and Saharan way of life.
✔️ Each ksar is a living memory of local cultures and traditions, some still inhabited or restored for tourism.
Among the most remarkable ksour:
Ksar Aghlad – a beautifully restored gem near Timimoun.
Ksar Draa – an ancient ksar, very well preserved, with circular red-earth walls.
The Gourara lives not only through its walls — it lives through its ancestral traditions, music, and celebrations.
A unique form of Saharan chant and poetry, listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, combining storytelling, singing, music, and rhythms passed down from generation to generation.
An annual religious pilgrimage:
Centered around the zawiya of Sidi El Hadj Belkacem in Timimoun,
Bringing together thousands of participants through chants, dances, and Sufi traditions.
This celebration is also recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
