Ahmed Zabana National Public Museum – History, Art and Heritage in Oran

Located in Oran, in the province of Oran, the Ahmed Zabana National Public Museum invites visitors to discover different aspects of Algerian heritage, from archaeology and natural history to ethnography and fine arts.

Its diverse collections make it a cultural stop for travellers wishing to enrich their exploration of western Algeria’s capital.

A Historic Institution in Oran’s Cultural Life

The museum’s origins date back to the late 19th century and the initiatives of the Geographical and Archaeological Society of the Province of Oran.

The earliest collections included coins, antiquities and natural history specimens. They gradually expanded to encompass additional collections.

The current building, located at 19, Avenue Ahmed Zabana, was inaugurated in 1935. Formerly known as the Demaëght Museum, the institution now bears the name of Ahmed Zabana in tribute to this figure of the national liberation struggle.

Archaeology and Discovering the Past

The archaeological collections explore several historical periods through objects and material evidence.

Prehistory, antiquities and numismatics are among the fields historically represented at the museum.

This perspective complements an exploration of the monuments and historic sites of Oran and its surrounding region.

Natural History and Ethnography

Natural history has been part of the museum’s identity since its earliest collections.

Ethnography also explores cultural heritage and ways of life, offering a complementary perspective on societies and their environment.

Accessible collections may vary depending on which rooms are open and the exhibitions on display.

A Space Dedicated to Fine Arts

The museum also has a fine arts section encompassing painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking.

Exhibitions have showcased Algerian artists alongside works depicting landscapes, traditions and life in Algeria.

The programme brings together historical discovery and artistic perspectives within a single visit.
