Majestically overlooking the city of Oran from the heights of Mount Murdjajo, at an altitude of nearly 400 meters, the Santa Cruz Fort is one of Algeria's iconic monuments. Built by the Spanish between 1577 and 1604, it was part of a vast defensive system protecting the Bay of Oran.
Its strategic location offered breathtaking views of the sea and the city, making this fort a prominent military post. It could house soldiers, shelter the governor's apartments, and store up to 300,000 liters of rainwater thanks to its reservoirs.
Over the centuries, the fort has undergone numerous battles, occupations, and reconstructions:
1708: Captured by Mustapha Bouchelaghem after a two-day siege
1738: Completely rebuilt by the Spaniard José Vallejo
1790: Oran recaptured by Mohamed el-Kebir
19th century: Restoration under French occupation
Today, the Santa Cruz Fort is open to the public and offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Bay of Oran, the port, and the city. A visit allows one to delve into the region's eventful history while enjoying a unique natural setting.
